Violin master Pinchas Zukerman makes his eagerly-awaited return to PCMS for an intimate evening of music-making with his wife Amanda Forsyth (principal cellist of the National Arts Centre… Show more Orchestra in Ottawa) and his long time recital partner—the super talented pianist Angela Cheng. It is no exaggeration that Zukerman's consummate showmanship sweeps the audience to its feet as he is recognized as a 'major violinistic discovery of this generation.' His December concert features Zukerman playing sonatas with Ms. Cheng and duos with Ms. Forsyth. Of particular note is Kodály's Duo composed in 1914 at the height of his interest in Hungarian folk music. Folk elements and idioms abound—for example, the use of five-tone scales and early modal church scales, abrupt changes in mood, extravagant ornamentation, and long rhapsodic passages as if the instruments were telling a story or reciting a poem. You might imagine yourself in the square of a Hungarian village on a summer evening listening to the local fiddler and cellist extemporize.
